You’re right, of course, when the monitor is large. On smaller monitors, the column width is fine – you can adjust the size of the messge by adjusting the with of the message list. The real issue with narrow columns (which work great in newspapers, etc) is that for plain text email, formatting gets messed up. HTML messages do much better (oh no, could it be that there is an advantage to HTML in email?)
