Okay, I think I fixed it. I removed one copy of the Monaco font (I had three copies). I think it's an old copy from my Mac OS 9 days. I'm keeping the other two copies active because I don't want to touch anything now that it's (apparently) working. (I hope it still works after a reboot!) Anyway, removing that one font made my quotes uncurl in all my other apps and stopped "l/" from turning into a single character in Entourage.
