It's possible that the first time you enter a folder, the sort might be a bit wacky if you've upgraded. But like you've observed, toggling it once should fix it.
BTW, the link has a mistake: The Handheld Sync is -not- the same from Entourage X. There are updates in 2004. Do run the Handheld Sync installer from the CD or your office folder.
