I'm using Entourage 2004 and Mac OS X 10.3.4. After using AOL to do a dial-up connection at my office, Entourage 2004 continues to try to use a dial-up connection even when other Internet applications (such as browsers) continue to use my LAN connection. This did not happen with Entourage vX.
At work my PowerBook is connected to the our company mail server and the Internet through the office LAN. Occasionally at work I also use a modem dial-up to access my AOL account. I do this because my company blocks access to AOL (and all other ISPs) through our network. As such, a dial-up, or webmail, is the only way I can check my AOL e-mail while I'm at work. In the past, in addition to "Built-In Ethernet" and "AirPort", I have included "Internal Modem" last in priority order in the Network Preferences for that location to ensure that AOL can find and use the modem when necessary. I have found that since installing Office 2004 / Entourage 2004 that if I do a dial-up to AOL and then disconnnect from AOL, Entourage 2004 will continually try to use a dial-up connection. It is always unsuccessful since I do not have the modem configured to dial an ISP. This happens even though every other Internet application (browsers, etc.) flawlessly connnects to the Internet over the LAN (no attempt to dialup). That configuration is "tainted" from then on, in that nothing I do in Network Preferences appears to correct the problem, short of deleting the "Modem" option in the list or completely deleting the location and creating a new one. Restarts, zapping PRAM, do not solve the problem. Even deleting my network preferences and completely reconfiguring only corrects the problem until the next time I try to dial AOL. As such it does not appear to be a corrupted preferences issue. With Entourage v.X. I connected to AOL via modem many times daily using the same OS X Location configuration with no problem. Even while connected via modem to AOL my LAN connnection with Entourage v.X worked just fine. The location I used had "Built-In Ethernet", "Airport" and "Internal Modem" in that order. I also set the network location to "Automatic." With that configuration I was able to go from office to home (AirPort Network/Cable Modem) to hotel and never have to adjust a network setting. A work-around seems to be to create a location that does not have a modem option, select that location and deselect the "Automatic" location feature. the problem is that doing so requires that I manually change locations every time I want to do an AOL dial-up and, when finished with AOL, switch back to the "Automatic" location or a location that does not include a modem option in order to reestablish my Entourage/LAN connection. While I understand (and agree with many) the most common suggestions for ditching AOL, AOL doesn't seem to be the issue. AOL dial-up worked fine with Entourage v.X, and every other Internet application works fine now. Something in Entourage 2004 appears to be causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
