Entourage's database is encoded is some airtight proprietary and cryptic
encoding. It's not plain text. Open a smallish database in TextEdit and
you'll see for yourself. The file system's Spotlight search method is
text-based. So to work with Entourage's database, MS would have to write
translators more-or-less the same as its present search methods, except
maybe they could be called from outside Entourage. If anything, that would
probably make them a tiny bit slower than the current in-house search. I
can't see the point in that. Maybe there's something they can harness after
doing the translation, but I doubt it: I'd bet you either use the OS engine
directly in the file system, or you don't. I'd also bet that they'll go on
optimizing the database and the search methods as they've done from version
to version: I find 2004's searching about 50 times or so faster than X's.
