Elizabeth, are you referring to the tiny grey 'x' icon with the downward
pointing arrow? Is it the same icon you see in the message list as well as
the preview pane for the message -- in the yellow bar that indicates the
message is junk mail?

Or are you referring to the "disclosure triangle" that appears in a blue bar
above the messages in the message list pane? The disclosure triangle is part
of the new message grouping features, and those groups can be disabled via
View menu > Arrange By > Show in Groups.

You can use the groups, however, to quickly sort through messages by
different criteria -- click in the Arrange By header in the message list
pane, and you'll get a pop-up menu with choices on how to group. The
messages are then grouped together, and if you click on the blue bar for a
group, you can select all the message in it. It can be handy. (I use it
mostly for deleting classes of messages, like Exchange event invitations.)
