The use of tcpflow would show whether the error is being generated by the
mail server and Entourage is just passing it along to the user, or whether
the error is being generated by Entourage. Diane Ross has put together some
good tips on the use of tcpflow at
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/troubleshoot/index.html>.

Basically, after installing tcpflow, you would type the following command in
Terminal:

sudo tcpflow -c host isp.mail.server.dom and port 110

After running this command, all of the conversation between Entourage and
the POP server "isp.mail.server.dom" will be shown in the terminal window.
This may help to diagnose the problem.
