This sounds like the problem in Entourage X with a malformed spam message,
but this was fixed for 2004.

Try this...drag one of the messages that causes a crash to the desktop. Now
create a new Identity in Entourage. Drag that message into the new identify
and see if you can open it there. If it crashes there, create a new User in
System Preferences and launch Entourage. Drag the message into this new
identity and see if it works.

I'm thinking corrupt font. Do you still have OS 9 installed?
