Nope, that's not it :-( Here is an update on the problem:
Since posting this message, and finding the "Perform Database integrity check in the background." setting, I decided to do a Compact database and since then I have not notice this horrible pause/delay I was describing. I'm almost certain there was something "goofy" with my database and the background integrity check was working overtime. Can anyone from the "inside" (Judd?) agree or disagree with my assumption?
