Deborah, I have changed my Plain text messages font from Monaco 9 to Monaco 10 because Monaco 9 was too small when smoothed and too awful-looking when unsmoothed. I have kept list items at Verdana 9, just like you and don't have a problem with that. As long as I don't set OS X's Font smoothing style to turn off text smoothing for font sizes '10 or smaller' or '9 or smaller,' everything in Entourage looks "acceptable." I still prefer Monaco 9 unsmoothed like it was in Entourage 2001 and X, but apparently that's just not going to happen. All the screenshots are of Entourage set to use Verdana 9pt to display list items and Monaco 9pt to display Plain text messages: "EX font smoothing 8" shows what the Entourage X Mail window and a plain text message looks like when OS X's font smoothing is set to turn off text smoothing for font sizes 8 or smaller. Everything looks perfect to me there. "EX font smoothing 9" is the same window and message with text smoothing turned off for font sizes 9 or smaller. The spacing in some of the list items is awful, but the message still looks perfect. "E2004 font smoothing 8" shows the Entourage 2004 Mail window and the same text message with OS X set to turn off text smoothing for fonts 8 and smaller. The list items look exactly the same as X, but the plain text message is smoothed and much tinier. It doesn't even look like the same font. "E2004 font smoothing 9" is the exact same window with OS X set to turn off font smoothing for 9 or smaller. The message text is awful, with letters running into each other all over the place. Meanwhile, the list items are still smoothed, even though they shouldn't be ... Except for the bolded folders, which aren't smoothed and actually look exactly like Xsmoothing9, like they should. Raul's screenshot <http://www.mexpix.com/images/screwedentoruage.jpg> demonstrated that the OS X's font smoothing preferences are not always obeyed, especially in the list items. And in both his and mine, you can see how when text smoothing is turned off, the font often looks like garbage, due to poor spacing between letters.
