First of all, it could be your proxy server that's blocking Entourage 2004
from getting to your email on the Exchange server. Make sure that Entourage
can bypass the proxy server by putting it's IP address in the box titled
"Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains" in the "Proxies" panel of
network settings. You might have to get the IP address for the proxy server
from your IT department. Just to be safe, I put both the IP address in that
field, but also the DNS name for our exchange server. It is working great
now, so I'm not messing with it by taking out the DNS name. :-P

It took me more than a month to figure out that the proxy server was the
problem. You can check it by turning off all your proxy settings in the
network panel. When you do, Entourage 2004 should be able to get to the
Exchange Server. But you won't be able to go out on the Internet. So that
won't fix the problem.

For some reason, good or bad I don't know, Microsoft took the proxy settings
out of Entourage's preferences with version 2004 and has the program rely on
your computer's proxy settings, specified in your network panel. They don't
tell you that you need to bypass the proxy settings. Probably in part
because most places don't want users to have administrative privileges.
Luckily for me, I know more about Macs than anyone in IT, so I'm the
informal Mac guru and support person for the whole company.

Second of all, you cannot use Entourage v. X and Office 2004 at the same
time and have full functionality. That's because each version of office uses
a different Database daemon. It will completely screw up your calendar and
other Office Notifications. I ended up with 593 copies of an event in my
calendar after running Entourage v X and Office 2004 at the same time. There
are lots of other errors as well, including not being able to use the
project center. Lots of other problems too. Not to mention once you've fired
up Entourage 2004 and v X on the same machine, your startup items end up
with launching both 2004 and v X database daemons. And they don't' like to
both be running at the same time at all.

Contrary to many peoples' beliefs, a rangefinder camera (of whatever
vintage), is not the invisibility ring from The Hobbit. - Dante Stella
