Edit->copy and Edit->cut commands stop working

Title: Edit->copy and Edit->cut commands stop working

Folks:

My task:  Replying to a message in Entourage 2004, MacOS 10.3.5.

Copy-and-paste via keyboard shortcut stopped working again.  I’ve had some trouble with this before trying to copy addresses from places other than the message area, posted here about it, and —maybe I missed something--  the solution was  to my mind never quite in sight.    OK, I can give up shortcuts — shouldn’t have to — but I’m willing to concede the issue as a temporary glitch.

But now I can’t use Edit menu commands to, say, cut a  selected chunk of text.   I can choose Edit-->Cut over and over again, but nothing happens — the clipboard continues to hold the previous contents. Same for Command-X.  Oh, yes, neither Edit-->Copy or Command-c have any effect other than blinking the “Edit” menu header.    

Further symptom: I’m not  completely sure about this, but I think that following Edit-->Cut, the second item on the Edit pull-down should be “Undo Cut”. But the previous item remains there.   It looks like nothing about the Edit-->Cut command is being processed.  Similar for Edit-->Copy.

Undo continues to work. Paste (from another app) works.  Select All works.  I didn’t check other Edit menu items.   In other apps, e.g. Word 2004, Edit->Copy and Edit-Cut continue to work normally.

Based on the previous discussion about shortcuts failing, I suspect that quitting and re-launching will fix this, and that’s what I’ll do — after I post this.   

Other suggestions?   What to do to confirm this issue and help to track it down?
