Why not use Entourage 2004's Export command in the File menu?

D’oh!   I never saw that before.  (Is it new with the 2004 version?)

Hmmm,  that menu item brings up a Wizard  to create “an Entourage archive” with a .rge extension.   I guess this is different from a MBOX file. More importantly, it looks like a 100% backup of whatever components are chosen.

I tried to run this to back up just mail, and (!) to not delete anything.  It saved about 34 MB of mails then put Entourage into a funny state, from which the only escape appeared to be “force quit” .

Not a confidence-building demonstration.  Though I am pleased to report that all my active emails were saved and the database appears intact.

What I can’t tell from this demonstration is the degree of compaction.  If a .rge archive of a 1 GB database is under 100 Mb, then I can imagine going ahead with this method.  If the savings is only on the order of 20%, it isn’t really worth it.

I’m going to look closer at the alternative, exporting individual folders to MBOX format... per another response.

Thanks,

Henry
