Here's my educated guess... The SMTP server you specified requires authentication to relay (send mail from a foreign IP address to a foreign IP address) and it is accepting POP-before-SMTP authentication. The first time you try to send the message it is rejected because you're considered a foreign system. You try again and again and these attempts are rejected as well. Entourage then checks your mail (POP or IMAP) from this account thereby authenticating your IP address for a period of time. Your next attempt to send the nmessage goes through now because you are an authenticated system. The solution to this problem is to either always check your mail before sending messages or to see if your SMTP server accepts SMTP AUTH.
