I had a 3.99GB database in Entourage X that would not open. I rebuilt it using both options (Typical, Advanced) many times and still wouldn't open. I finally used Entourage 2004 and successfully imported the X identity. Then each mail folder was drag copied to the desktop, which created an MBOX file and they were placed back into Entourage X.
