Yes, because as I understand from the documentation (and Paul's comment) it
does a better job with backing up than Hotsync, so when I discovered the
problem I could have reverted to the previous state of Entourage on the
computer.

Since I don't sync anything except Entourage, there's really no way to tell
whether it was HotSync or the E'rage conduit that was at fault.

Yes, and that's why (I presume) some categories weren't lost - the contacts
whose primary category was one that's on the handheld still had that
category. It was the ones whose primary category was something not on the
handheld that lost all category information.
