p.s. Even though deleting Normal solved the problem I remember that the root
of the problem ultimately was a font that Word didn't like. The problem kept
coming back until I had eliminated the bad font. Word is particularly fussy
about fonts, so if the killing Normal fix works she might also try
eliminating any non-standard fonts and seeing if the problem goes away
permanently and then reintroducing fonts carefully.

Office apps have very weird non-standard font handling. For example as I
type this email Entourage is both smoothing and not smoothing fonts of
exactly the same size in my folder list (and ignoring my system-wide
smoothing preferences) and looking at the font menu in WYSIWYG mode on an
HTML page causes Entourage go into spinning beachball mode for a good 4
minutes. Aarg.I wish Apple just provided a good API for a font menu with
WYSIWYG fonts grouped by type. Is that too much to ask?! but I digress.
