It does indeed bring up “simper,” but that is because the word “simple” is NOT in the definition list (although several phrases beginning with simple are in the list). I think this is the default behavior (that is to pick the word before where it would be, if it were in the list.)

On a related note: I'm usually one in the "no more features!!!" group in regards to Office. But the one feature I love in Word is its "Synonyms" contextual menu selection. I really wish that was in Entourage. I find myself opening up a Word doc, just to find synonyms to words I'm using in an Entourage 2004.
