When a folder or volume dragged to the Privacy tab does not "take",
it can be that Spotlight Indexing has been turned off in the
Terminal. Indexing must be on for items to be added to the privacy tab.
If Bob used the terminal to turn off indexing, that could be the
problem.

Yes, when you drag the MUD folder into the Privacy tab, or choose it
via the + button, the folder should appear in the window. Are you
perhaps dragging an alias instead of the actual folder?

Hmmm. I did this once before with a cloned OS on an external
drive and
when I dragged and dropped the icon of the HD into the window below
Spotlight's <Privacy> tab, the icon of the disk stayed there.
When just now I did the same thing with the folder you
suggested, I got
the green circle and + sign as I dragged it to the window, but
when I let
go, the icon of the folder did not appear in the window.
When I tried this operation using the Plus/Minus boxes under the
<Privacy> window, same thing. The folder icon did not appear in
the window.
Should it have???
Thanks,
bob
