OS X is very 'efficient' at re-using freed up disk space so unless you want to spring for professional data recovery, I think you're probably better off cutting your losses by trying to get the people who sent you those images to resend. If you do want to pursue data recovery, you should stop using the Mac immediately - every time anything gets written to that drive, you're lowering your chances for success. Once the festival is over and done with, you should also think about getting a regular backup solution for your computer(s).
