I have also experienced this exact problem and have reported it to
Microsoft. AFAIK the cause has not yet been determined. I'd say it
falls in the category of "known bug with no solution so far".

Was the mailing list served by Mailman software, as mine is?

I discovered that, apparently, Entourage is the only application that
has problems displaying the messages. Windows users saw the message
properly, as did people who viewed it in Mail or even Gyazmail. AOL
users saw it correctly. Earthlink's web interface (the old one)
displayed it right, but the new beta mail interface distorted the
graphics and failed to position things correctly. The latter is most
likely a bug in the beta software. So, as far as I can tell, only
Entourage seems to have this problem with HTML messages with graphics
sent via a mailing list.
