I had a similar experience prior to a restart. After installing SP2 I
kept getting a dialog about Excel being unable to find some MS
framewrorks. After a restart all's well.

Verdana is not in the font list although there are a bunch of
Japanese fonts

Verdana works fine with SP2 for me.
Okay, this is weird, but it works fine after I logged out and back
in again.
