Personally I would encourage you to set up your list using a professional
mailing list server. You can either run your own or contract out to
companies who offer list hosting. Your existing Internet provider may
already offer this. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle for only a minor
amount of money. Subscribing and unsubscribing can be automated and a
dedicated mailing list server handles large mailings more efficiently than a
regular individual SMTP server.
If you decide to go with Entourage, here are some things to consider. Prior
to sending out such a large mailing, best to advise your Internet provider
and ask about their rules for sending a batch mailing. They may ask you to
schedule sending during an off-peak time and to break up the job into
batches (the Split Recipients AppleScript can help you here). They may get
complaints about unwanted email (regardless of the actual opt-ins tatus of
your customers), and they need to be prepared to answer those complaints.
Also does it matter if I use plain text or HTML email to send out?
No, although an HTML message is larger and will take additional resources to
send.
