Is it just me but I appear unable to insert Keynote files into the Project Manager...no problems with Adobe In-design etc?

This is because Keynote files are Apple 'Packages' - a special sort of folder. You can't add folders to a project.
Try creating an alias to the keynote file, then add that alias to a project – that may work.
