As an additional Preview-Pane-friendly technique:

In those cases where a message is NOT the currently selected message, it can
be deleted by control-clicking (or right-clicking) and selecting "Delete
Message". This method does not display the message even when the Preview
Pane is on. This helps me (e.g.) delete porn spam without displaying it at
work, which could be embarrassing. It also helps with some cases of
undisplayable HTML.
