I get the reversal without leaving the current window and without switching to a different mode; I stay in "Mail" mode, using a horizontal 3-paned layout. I usually select the mailbox to read by typing in its name, hit TAB to focus the message list, read/delete the messages, the Shift-TAB back to the mailbox list, select next mailbox, .... And sometimes, in the middle of this, the direction of the TAB key reverses...
