At this point I would recommend installing tcpflow:

(If you have an Intel Mac, I personally believe that it would be better to
build it from source than to use the PowerPC binary available on the page)

Once installed, run the following in Terminal:

sudo /usr/local/bin/tcpflow -c host smtp.mac.com

As long as you DON'T check the advanced sending option "SMTP service
requires a secure connection (SSL)" the whole conversation with the .Mac
SMTP server will be displayed in the Terminal window.

If you need help deciphering the error at that point, send me a copy of the
output or post it here. Just be sure to delete your password from the
output.  ;-)
