I use Verizon and have about 15 different email addresses on different systems (including Earthlink) and use all of them daily.
The only hassle has to do with the way some of the smtp accounts are handled. To send email via earthlink you must use a special authenticated smtp server (as opposed to the regular server), on some accounts you cannot use their smtp servers (because the mail is considered to be relayed) and must use verizon... But all the smtp issues were ultimately fairly easy to suss-out with a bit of investigation...
