If you're using Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), make sure that the "Office 2004 Identities" (or "Office X Identities", if appropriate) folder is excluded from Spotlight searches. Go to System Preferences, and then open Spotlight Preferences. Click the "Privacy" tab, and drag the "Office 2004 Identities" folder (located in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/) into the list.
Working in folders with lots (thousands) of messages can still be somewhat slow in Entourage 2004, though it is definitely faster than Entourage X is. If your database is fairly large, that may also have something to do with it. Is your copy of Entourage fully up-to-date? If you have Entourage 2004, download and install the latest Office 2004 update, which is the Office 2004 11.3.3 update. In Office 2004, use Microsoft AutoUpdate to get the latest updates. From any Office application, go to Help > Check for Updates (or manually launch Microsoft AutoUpdate from the Applications folder). If any updates are needed, they will display in a sheet, at which point you can check them and press the "Install" button to download and install them. Updates can also be found at the Microsoft web site: <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#Office2004> If you have Entourage X, download and install the latest Office X update, which is 10.1.9. It's available from Microsoft. <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX> In the future, please indicate which version of Entourage you are using.
