>From recent reviews of this list¹s archives and links in it elsewhere, I now
understand that I can achieve higher security on getting and sending email
by invoking Authenticated POP account settings. However, when I experiment
with the ³advanced send² and ³advanced receiving² options (e.g., ³SSL²),
some of these seem to trigger other things that then bar sending or
receiving, either because I don¹t understand what I am doing or because my
ISP and the intermediary cable company through which I must operate do not
support the protocols with the parameters I requested. At one point, I was
asked to ³install² a certificate, requiring me to delve into ³terminal² the
thought of which made me shudder, so I retreated from that path immediately.
I know my end-point ISP (from which this email flows out to be specific)
³supports² A-POP. Whether my immediate home¹s cable company (RCN/Starpower)
does or not (or even if that matters for incoming or outgoing) I haven¹t a
clue.
There is scant mention of APOP in the mvps archives, just a declaration that
it is supported.
GURUS: I await your input and advice. (For the moment, I am NOT inclined to
go all the way to IMAP, but maybe some responders will want to persuade me
to be open to that; I will be open to that but would still like to get APOP
working inbound and outbound as a first step.)
To be specific, for APOP, how should the advanced Account settings be
established for sending and receiving? Will I need a ³certificate² or two
and is there a non-terminal way to install it (them)?
If IMAP it must be, I would appreciate a recap or links to idiot-proof setup
instructions that a lingering POPer could fathom and implement.
