Hi-

The short answer that I have found is that none of the so-called smart
phones are a great solution with a Mac. The hero for us Mac people is a
company called Mark/Space. They make "Missing Sync" software that pretty
much gives you 100% access to your phone, whatever it is, on a Mac. It is
relatively cheap, $40. About what Verizon will charge you for an extra sync
cable or car charger. It is the best solution I have found by far and it
lets you pick the phone you want, not just the phone that will work with
your Mac.

That being said...

The Palm OS phones tend to be more compatible with the Mac than the Windows
Mobile phones out of the box. The Palm OS phones tend to have more usable
software in my opinion. The Windows Mobile phones give you the advantage of
running Windows on your phone, which has many of the same benefits of
running Windows on your computer. (Do you need to "remote in" to computer in
terminal mode from your phone? Some people do, 99.9% of us don't.)

I have a 700wx as a work phone with data service. It is Windows based and
locks up every four or five days for no apparent reason. I had a Treo 650
Palm OS based before it, and only had to hard reset it once every three of
four weeks and I could almost always trace it to something I did. I used
many more applications on the 650 than on the 700wx. Windows on a phone is a
pretty horrible experience for the average person, and even more so for a
Mac user. I would recommend the 700p as your first choice and pair it with
Missing Sync for Palm OS (Current version is 6.0.2) and I think you'll be
happy. The Palm OS was the closest thing to the Mac OS on a phone until
Apple put their OS on a phone. Since you ruled out the iPhone, I think it
would be a solid choice.

Also, be sure to check out the Blackberries. The people who have them swear
by them. They tend to be more stable than the other smart phones no matter
what the OS, but are very limited in terms of software titles, especially
free ones. But that is a big part of why they are so stable. There is a
Missing Sync solution for them also. If you want a phone to primarily be a
phone and an emailbox, the Blackberry with Missing Sync is a solid solution.

Note: I don't get anything from Mark/Space, they just make a killer product
at a fairly reasonable price. www.markspace.com
