Press reports today indicate that Microsoft will issue "updates" a year or so from now to allow Microsoft Word documents to be saved in an Open Source format. See <http://www.microsoft.com/opensource/interop/default.mspx> for at least some details from MS. (For independent news, Google key words and you will find plenty of hits.) This supposedly addresses and cures some of the disagreements between MS and the European Union.

Do list leaders/readers know more? Will it apply to only the current generation or will there be updates for one or more prior versions, such as Office 2004? When? Will the update be at no further cost to users? Etc.
