I am quite surprised to be writing this email from Apple's mail.app.
I've been a user of Entourage and its predecessors since Claris Email
1.0.
I've defended Entourage against attacks from other Apple bigots, based
on the rich feature set and the tight integration with Microsoft Office.
I've played with the Apple productivity apps in the past and found
them lacking in the flexibility which has made Entourage so useful to
me.
But the latest "improvements" in Office'08 and SP1 have now convinced
me that it's finally time to abandon Entourage and move on to the
Apple apps.
I could cite many issues, but the three that nailed the coffin are:
1. The outrageously slow performance of all of the Office 2008 apps.
This was NOT fixed in SP1. When "Just a minute while I check my email"
turns into "go without me, it's still loading", it's time to find a
functional modern mail program.
2. The elimination of the direct sync with the Treo/Palm OS. While I
know this is a very special case, and a small market, it has cost me
countless hours of agony. It forced me to shift from the Treo to the
iPhone and to rely much more heavily on iCal, all the while having to
regularly eliminate duplicate calendar events caused by I have no idea
whom, but unacceptable nonetheless. And while I like some things about
the iPhone, it's still no Treo in functionality.
3. The latest "feature" of SP1, which no longer bolds the folder name
for IMAP folders with new unread mail, forcing me to click on every
single folder to see if there's new mail.
I started working seriously with mail.app yesterday, and while I still
have some set up issues to get through, and I will dearly miss
Categories, I can't justify the time lost waiting for Entourage to do
something, anything.
Of course I may get frustrated with Apple's apps as well, so it may
not be goodbye forever, but it's certainly so long for now.
Maybe in a few weeks I'll get up the gumption to try Pages, Numbers
and Keynote as well!!
It might feel good to have a fully functional computer that's
completely free of Microsoft apps...
Barry
P.S. It will be particularly interesting to see if this email ever
gets to anyone else, given the inexplicable unreliability of Entourage-
talk of late.
