Nice tulip, Scott!

The new elm champ must be massive if it's bigger than the beauties up in
Coudersport.

ENTS

I gave a tree tour for the volunteers of the Scott Arboretum at
Swarthmore College in Delaware Co. Pa. the other day. We had a nice
half day tour to look at some local champion trees. After the tour, I
wanted to measure some of the trees in the arboretum to include in the
champion tree register. The last time I poked around there, I found a
new champion Kentucky coffee tree and a new champion American Elm.
This day we listed a new champion cut leaf Japanese maple and a Paw
Paw. We then ventured into the woods behind the college where the
Crumm Creek runs through to the Delaware River. The grounds manager
wanted to show me a big tulip down in the draw that he thought was
large. He led me down a steep trail towards the creek to a mammoth
old tulip that weighed in with a cbh of 16.8'. I wasn't able to see
the top, but a straight up laser shot provided 48 yds. This was a
forest tree with a cylindrical trunk with little taper and no branches
below 80 feet. What a sight. I hope to return in winter and try for
a rucker index on this area, although I didn't see ten different
species while I was there. We'll see.
