I am forwarding this email to the Eastern Native Tree Society. I received this email in April, but it slipped through the cracks. I just happened to find it again today. I apologize to Dr. Lawson for letting it go for so long. Hopefully this is still relevant to him.
I thought this would be the place for him to look for like-minded individuals. Kirk Johnson -----Forwarded Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Apr 14, 2008 10:55 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Question about other "Friends" Dear "info", I think I met you at a seminar you gave at Pitt. I have used your literature and distributed it at our synagogue when I led a session on the New Year for Trees. And, I follow what is going on through you mailings. That said, I make my request. I have an interest in the PA wilderness that I would like to share. I am wondering if there is any organization sympathetic to it. I am interested in studying patterns in nature -- sort of like Leopold -- but very different patterns. At the present and for the past 4 years, I have been interested in viewing forest on one scale and trees on a finer scale as "fiber stochastic processes". For example, you may have heard of L-systems, a methodology that views plants as being constructed out of linear elements by means of random algorithms. This is not my interest but illustrates the intellectual beauty of such projects. My work has focused on examining fiber orientation distributions through digital image processing and through microwave scattering. Although I have been working with professors at Pitt, (physics and biology) the project has been hampered by a rule forbidding on-campus faculty collaborations with outsiders. Papers have been written. I even gave an invited talk at NIST. While, there may be many potential uses for the reuslts of my work, commercialization is not my goal. I see what I am doing as a form of passive observation -- like bird watching -- only on a higher level mathematical and scientific sophistication. In your broad experience, have you any knowledge of any like-minded individuals? It would be a great solice to me to find some.
