Turner, Thanks for the report. It's nice to see some spruce numbers from West Virginia. There is some speculation out there that WV might once have grown the largest red spruce. In the Smokies, Will Blozan and Jess Riddle have noted that the largest and tallest spruce tend to be on south facing slopes or in gently sloping hanging coves below 5000', which is lower than their core habitat but offers more moderate conditions that may allow larger sized trees. Good luck in your future forays. Snowy Rhodo can be pretty miserable.
