ENTS, I Measured three Live Oaks in Ocean Springs Saturday, all 200 years old+. Ocean Springs is one of the most productive places on the Coast for big Live Oaks and most of its people cherish them. A small city located on the Eastern Shore of Biloxi Bay famous for its Springs. In the late 18oo's and early 1900's people from New Orleans and surrounding areas would come to this peaceful place. The first is located at Hanley and Govt., streets in a small Live Oak Grove containing around 20 trees. Several are near 20' CBH, most are 16-18'. The property is being developed into a park like setting with Homes built along the Grove perimeter. The Owner was very active in protecting the trees, and was interested in what I was doing. The Etheridge Oak, CBH-20'1", Height-57' and Spread-126'. I then traveled a few miles west towards the Bay turning on Front Beach Dr. There are several hundred Live Oaks along the small Bluff that follows the Bay. I measured one Live Oak at 513 Frontbeach Dr., and one at 515 Front Beach Dr. The first is the Charbonnet Oak growing in the center of a new home built recently due to Hurricane Katrina. The Charbonnet Oak, CBH-20'7", Height-72' and Spread-120'. The owner was also happy to let me measure the tree with much interest. The second Oak was much larger growing along a fence between two properties. I named it the Front Beach Oak, CBH-28, Height-63' and Spread-150'. Both of these Live Oaks had 5' of saltwater under them in the Hurricane Katrina. I'll post some photos on the file page and update the Live Oak listing which now is at 93 trees 20 CBH or larger!
