Oh, Carpinus? Hornbeam? That would make sense, I've seen some
different planted varieties of that and the bud/twigs do look a bit
similar to Beech, although not as elongated and as pointed. I had a
feeling it was something other than just a Beech with some rather wild
branch structure but wasnt sure. Thanks for the clarification!

I was actually just out your way today at the New England Grows! expo
at the BCEC.

Took a quick snapshot off Google Earth. This is the mini "Pine
Barrens" around here I suppose I might call it. The area to the left
of "Lake Pleasant Road" is nearly all Pitch Pine, and off to the right
its all Pitch Pine tapering off to a mix of White and Pitch Pines to
the extreme right of the image. Its not a huge area, but the semi-
monoculture of it is kind of interesting. The distance between
"Bartlett Rd" and "Millers Falls Rd" at the extreme tops and bottom of
the image is just about 1 mile to give you an idea.
