Will: here is the email from last week: Here is a tentative plan for the February trip to Congaree:
Friday the 20th Dr. Robert Van Pelt, Jason Childs (Andrew Joslin?) and I plan to climb and 3-D map/model the National Champion loblolly pine for various canopy attributes and total displacement volume. This is almost without a doubt the largest Pinus in the entire eastern US. Any one who would like to attend the climb and assist with photography/video would be great. We will meet at the new Visitor Center @ ~9:30 to 10am. After the climb, Stuart Greeter has invited the ENTS crew to his place for a social which I think we should take him up on! Stuart is a ranger at Congaree and is working on a “Big Tree” brochure. Man, we can get him some of the best information available! Bring your photos and jump-drives… We can coordinate the next day as well. Saturday the 21st Dr. Vic Shelburne, the SC Big Tree Coordinator will be leading a hike and wants to include a tutorial on the ENTS method. The idea is to meet his group at the VC or former SC State Champion loblolly pine to observe and learn our techniques. Dr. Van Pelt and I plan to climb and model the insanely gnarly tree for a canopy mapping and displacement volume. I envision the climbing crew will meet ~8-8:30am at the VC. Meanwhile, I envision some of the other ENTS crew exploring new areas with Marcus Houtchings or remeasuring current state champions. In the PM maybe we ENTS can convene at a restaurant for a meal or other social activity to share findings. If we get to use the research dorm maybe we can meet up there and cook a dinner. Sunday the 22nd I REALLY want to see the National Champion sweetgum and perhaps we can get canoe access to get to the tree quickly. I would like to model the volume with the reticle. A hunt for new giant loblollies would be great, too- the plate is wide open! If the dorm is not available BVP and I will likely get a hotel so we have power to do data entry in the evenings. I will send a list of hotels for those interested and maybe we can get a “suite” of rooms cheap! I would like to get a full list of attendees and cell phone/contact info (off-list). There is bound to be logistical changes and communication is a must. Perhaps we can secure a small portion of a message board somewhere to leave notes. Will F. I haven't gotten any emails back and was beginning to worry if the off-line link, "reply to author" on the page didn't work.
