Bobs formula gives a good calculation of crown volume for these flattened dome 
shaped trees.  As a quick calculation in the field, you can treat many of these 
forms as 1/2 of a scalene ellipsoid.  (1/2 egg shaped).  To do a quick rough 
volume estimate measure the two major axis of the crown spread and the height.  
Then:

        Volume =  length major axis x length minor axis x height x 0.5

 Thi is not perfect because this calculation assumes the full half elispse is 
present with the sides starting vertical and curving over to form the top of 
the crown, when in fact many of these represent portions off the top rather 
than a full hemisphere of the ellipsoid.
