Larry,

I never tire of your descriptions and pictures of these magnificent live oaks
of the the southern tier states. You have very successfully established your
self as a one man army in pursuit of the biggest of the southern live oaks.
Please keep up the good work.

Subject: [ENTS] Waveland Ms. Live Oak

ENTS,  I traveled along Hwy 90 west today across Bay of St. Louis to the small
city of Waveland. I was told of a large Live Oak near the Bay by a friend at
work. I saw this tree a year ago but I didn't get a chance to go back to it. He
refreshed my memory a couple weeks ago so off I went to measure it. A nice
specimen growing 300 yards from the Bay of St. Louis on Michigan St. CBH-23',
H-48.6' and Avg. Sp. 120'x114'.  This tree had adapted well to its location. A
broad crown but low in height, which seams to be the norm close to the gulf.
This area was hit the hardest by Hurricane Katrina back in 2005. Water height
here was 35-40' above normal! This Oak had only 8-13' of the crown above
saltwater for the duration of the storm. You can see by the photos with little
damage! All around this area has little development, and scars will  remain for
decades. I also did a big Palm at the old  Hancock Bank in Bay St. Louis, a
city just northeast of Waveland. I'll post it at a later date.  Larry
