I would like to raise awareness about a recent and urgent issue
surrounding Hemlock and Canadice Lakes, the last two undeveloped
Finger Lakes in New York. The state has been working towards
acquiring these lakes and the surrounding lake from the city of
Rochester, in order to have it managed by the Department of
Environmental Conservation as a park or nature reserve. Contained
within this land is at least 400 acres of old-growth forest, with some
trees believed to be over 400 years old.

However, due to budget issues, New York may not have the funds to
acquire the property. If they cannot do so by March 31st, it leaves
the door open for future shoreline development and environmental
degradation.

I have written a petition that can be found at the current link:
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/HelpProtectTwoFingerLakes/index.html
There are more details about the two lakes contained in the petition
text. There's no obligation whatsoever in signing it. You do NOT
have to donate to the website.

For recent news, check out this story:

Financial woes should never compromise the integrity and protection of
New York state's environmental resources.
