Good find, and close to home!
Re spiraling grain, your upper-right to lower-left comment accurately describes 
the two trees you speak of, but I'm thinking I've seen upper-left to 
lower-right spiraling grain too, and in the northern hemisphere...my memory is 
imperfect, but I believe Bob and I noted both spiraling directions in maple in 
Massachusetts in the early 90's...Bob???
