Barry,

both of these species occur in the pine barrens of southeastern MA not far from 
where I live.  Just like in southern NJ, scrub oak, or bear oak as I like to 
call it, is much more common than dwarf chestnut oak in this area.

The Arnold Arboretum has a really nice dwarf chestnut oak that is over a 
hundred years old and if I remember correctly it is well over 20' tall.
