Eli, I visited the tree about a year ago after the arson. The tree was still alive, but they closed off the park nearby and had police tape to keep people out. It is across a small creek and I think they had been talking about removing the bridge because they now consider the tree to be a hazard, even though its status isn't much different than it was before.

Hi ENTS, I'll be traveling through southwestern Ohio in a week or so and would love to see some giant sycamores if anyone could steer me in the right direction. I'll be near Gallipolis, OH which is across the river from Point Pleasant, WV. In related news, in my internet research on big sycamores of that area I saw that the WV champion sycamore at "Sycamore Park" in Webster Springs fell victim to a 17 year old arsonist this past April! Check out the story here: http://www.dailymail.com/News/200904270485?page=1&build=cache He was also charged with possession and underage drinking! That tree was 500 years old...
