ENTS,
I've got two copies of a rare book called Annual Report of the New Jersey State
Museum, Including a Report of the Plants of Southern New Jersey, With Especial
Reference to the Flora of the Pine Barrens, and the Geographic Distribution of
the Species, by Witmer Stone, 1910.
It has 828 pages including the index, but not including the plates in the back,
which add another 3/4 inch to the thickness of the book.
Anyway one of the plates in the back has this caption: Sand Dunes, and Buried
Forest, below Piermont. Unfortunately I've never been able to find out anything
about these dunes and buried forest. In the photo you can see mature trees
fully engulfed in sand. From what I've been able to find out, Piermont was on
one of our coastal islands in Cape May County. I think over time it was
absorbed by Avalon. The alternate spelling is Peermont, and the post office
there was only in existence from 1907 through 1934.
To some people, this book is considered the botanical Bible for the Pine
Barrens. I love it.
Barry
