Jenny,

No need to apologize. We appreciate your observations and enjoy the enthusiasm
and energy that you bring to ENTS. If you ever make it to western
Massachusetts, Monica and I would be happy to show you around. You could learn
to use measuring equipment if you so chose. I have enough to supply an army.
Monica doesn't choose to measure trees, although she could if she wanted to.
She is quite good in mathematics and remembers everything she hears. I guess
that is the professor and classical musician in her. A great memory is a
prerequisite for both occupations.
BTW, Amy was most appreciative of getting her tree on the Piedra River. She
sent us an email just before heading to Santa Fe. When you see her next, please
ask her about her newly acquired interest in perfumes.
In terms of named trees, now you, Barry, Amy, and Nancy Weiss all have trees on
the Piedra River in the San Juans of Colorado. You all should start a little
club.

Subject: [ENTS] Maine beeches and hemlocks

ENTS,

I can't manage a trip "report" yet, but I can comment on a few tree
situations at the moment.

I have not seen 1 healthy beech tree. I had no idea they were so sick
with Beech Bark disease. That beautiful smooth bark all 'poxed'. I
commented that I was glad they didn't have mirrors to look into.
They'd be devastated...

BUT I have not seen 1 sick hemlock! This was so exciting. A few stands
we've visited (this is a Forest Ecology workshop),  have some big (to
me...) tall guys - yeah, that's information you can REALLY do
something with. I can do some circumferences today, but not height. I
know these are nothing compared to the southern guys, but, since so
much forest was logged here, it's great to see some that were left (I
guess they are considered second generation).

Also, I have encountered some very big birches.

You know, I'm not sure why I bothered to write this incredibly useless
discussion. Thanks for you patience, if you made it through....

Jenny
