Mike--

Thanks for the feedback on Hyatt's Woods--it is a neat place.  I'm not sure if
the landowner is interested in a conservation easement on the property--some of
the land is owned or controlled by other family members, and I don't think they
are interested in giving up any of their control in the land.

Great job Don! Your article on Hyatt’s woods was awesome! The photography is
superb. I especially liked the photo of the swamp chestnut oak.

Perhaps the owners will consider a conservation easement in the future?

Beth – your report on the Stewardship Conference was interesting. You are right
that forestry is underfunded in the Farm Bill but what they are funding (for
marginal forestry practices) is mostly a waste of money and will have very
little impact. The most important thing government can do for forest landowners
is to try and encourage them to keep their land in forest by keeping their
property taxes low (current use). Landowners should also be compensated for the
ecosystem benefits they provide to society through tax credits, etc. Providing
grants to pay for a Forest Stewardship Plan is a good start.

The session on aquaculture was cool but my wife served us some tilapia the
other night and it was awful! Give me haddock!

The session about growing seedlings from seed was interesting but I’m more
interested in direct seeding for forests th
at have failed to regenerate adequately. After our state clearcut some Norway
spruce and red pine plantations, the area regenerated mostly raspberries and
blackberries so how could we hasten tree regeneration in those areas? I say
prescribe burn the area and then plant tree seeds.

Finally I see they are pushing the carbon trading scam everywhere - $8/acre
won’t do much for landowners but it will help line the pockets of speculators
like Goldman Sachs.

Mike
