A lot of great longleaf flatwoods on the Croatan and over at the MC
base at Jacksonville. While I can't think of any outstanding large
trees, there are some fascinating ecosystems in the pocosins in and
around the forest, north and west of Wilmington. Also the Alligator
River NFWR is some wild land also. The Live Oaks really come into
their own around Wilmington. There is a big one at the Orton
Plantation on the west side of the Cape Fear just south of Wilmington,
some beautiful gardens at Orton also. And while not forest related
take the ferry over to Ocracoke and then the boat trip over to the
ghost village of Portsmith on the north end of the Core Banks.
