Barry,

Yes, looking at the air photo it appears like there were some low berms placed 
across a natural drainage at one time to create the pools.  The original forest 
in the drainage was removed to make the pools open.  Originally it looks like 
it was a tributary to the stream on the other (east) side of the road.  Things 
in an area like the barrens likely take a long time to loose the 
characteristics created by human utilization.  it is like the old Oregon Trail 
- you can still se the wagon ruts going across the prairie in Idaho.

        If you switch to aerial and see the whole thing, it appears that some 
of it is man-made, as if it were a former cranberry bog or something
